Teeth scaling is harmful: Dental myth or facts about teeth Cleaning

You have metal braces and you are starting a conversation with your boss when, out of the blue, you’re slammed with an alarming unpleasant odor and yellowish-looking teeth. Your supervisor starts holding his breath and avoiding you while you don’t understand why this is happening. Do you start thinking what if that’s your breath? Your train of thought veers and all you can think about is a quick exit and at that very moment, you start searching for gum. One fine day you woke up and went to the bathroom to freshen up, while you pick up your toothbrush and applied a good amount of paste over it & just before brushing you noticed your teeth have become stained and you are unable to remove all the debris of them despite the fact you brush every day. Then you carry on brushing and start to see a small amount of blood oozing out of your gums.

Thankfully, Aligners are removable braces and you can eat, drink anything and tooth brushing while removing them rather than eating humble pie and apologizing for foul-smelling breath and bleeding gums in conventional braces (metal braces, Ceramic braces, Lingual braces) treatment, there are several ways to treat and prevent these issues. Simply, If you have any of these signs whether you put on braces or not, you need professional help from a teeth doctor called a dentist and it could be cured by one of the most performed procedures in dentistry i.e scaling and polishing. Dental scaling and polishing procedure is the conventional and preventive treatment for many years in dentistry as it’s the most demandable treatment which patient opts from a dentist in routine OPD. Now, let’s just understand what it merely means by scaling and polishing. Aim of our article today is to make one understand the need for scaling in polishing, clear some misconceptions related to it to raise awareness, and answer most asked questions by the patients:

What is scaling?

Teeth scaling is a procedure performed by the dentist in the dental clinic, it removes the hard deposits of plaque/calculus from the crown, gums margins, and root surface, which causes damage to the teeth supporting structures ( gingiva, periodontal ligament, bone, and cementum) resulting in bleeding gums, bad smell, tooth sensitivity, bone resorption around standing tooth or teeth leading to teeth mobility and in severe cases, infection occurs, spreads to the jawbone and surrounding structures resulting in swelling on the face.

What is deep cleaning?

Deep cleaning is performed to remove diseased cementum from the subgingival root surface (beneath the gums or even debridement of the soft tissue lining the pocket. This promotes cleaning at a microscopic level decreasing the harmful bacterial load. Thus, maintaining normal healthy flora of the mouth. Root planning will probably need to be repeated regularly as per need.

What is a teeth polishing?

Looking for a shiny & brighter smile?

The solution is here !!!!!

Scaling is usually followed by polishing. Set to be the second step of teeth cleaning treatment. Teeth Polishing is also carried out as an oral prophylaxis in most dental practices. It is the act of making a tooth surface glossy and lustrous to maximum smoothening of the teeth. During polishing biofilm, dental plaque, minor stains, and acquired pellicle are removed.

There are two types of polishing techniques used in routine practice ;

1) Traditional polishers

2) Prophy jet polishers

Traditional polishers are commonly used in daily practice by dentists using different polishing pastes with the help of a handpiece. Abrasive and non-abrasive pastes can be used as a polishing medium and usually, it is performed by the rotary brush and cups. These prophylactic pastes with their abrasive material also remove extrinsic stains and help re-mineralize the teeth with the addition of fluoride in the polishing paste.

Advanced polishing method: Profi jet polisher

Prophy jet is now the advanced technique of polishing the teeth without using any handpiece, polishing pastes & contact with teeth because it has the air, or water spray containing sodium bicarbonate or nonsodium powder to remove dental plaque, and stains and gives a shiny brighter smile to patients. This teeth polishing method is recommended for smokers' stains, and people having metallic fillings and dental crowns. This procedure also saves the time of the patient and the dentist because it is very quick.

What causes dental plaque and tartar build-up around gums margins?

Why is this happening to me? The main culprit of gum diseases is plaque and calculus. Plaque and calculus can be caused by several various reasons, a few of which are listed below:

1. Inability to maintain oral hygiene

It’s vital to brush at least twice a day, once after having breakfast and then before sleeping.

The major reason behind all this is ignorance towards basic oral hygiene such as brushing twice a day, flossing, and rinsing with mouthwash in addition to this tongue cleaning may be required.

Let's discuss this in detail. First, we have to understand what is difference between plaque and tartar.

What is Plaque?

After you are done with your meal, food tends to stick to your teeth creating a sticky film of pellicle and plaque buildup throughout the day. This sticky substance in the presence of the prevalent bacteria in your oral cavity, gums, tongue, or teeth tends to feed on the food you just had, leaving an acidic environment favorable for the bacteria to nourish especially on the gum margins. This layer is called Dental plaque which can be removed by brushing the teeth twice a day but still, there are some areas where the brush can not reach.

What is Calculus or Tartar?

If patients don’t do proper and regular tooth brushing twice a day, plaque builds over time and turns into Calculus or Tartar which is a much harder substance compared with a plaque which can not be cleaned and removed with tooth brushing and here scaling and polishing comes in, to save the day. If ignored for a longer time, it leads to the destruction of the supporting structure of the teeth explained above.

2. Mal-aligned teeth

Mal-aligned teeth can cause accumulation of plaque and the inability of the brush to access those hard-to-reach areas. This can cause increased accumulation of calculus which can progress towards periodontal disease.

3. Smoking

Are you a smoker? Tobacco causes a deficiency of oxygen in the bloodstream, so the inflamed and infected gums don't heal. Talk to your physician or dentist for help and support in quitting smoking.

4. Co-morbid associated with plaque accumulation

People suffering from chronic medical diseases such as diabetes are at an increased risk of periodontal infections and calculus accumulation due to their lower ability in resisting infections and lesser healing ability all of this arises from increased sugar levels in the blood causing thickened blood vessels which may reduce the flow of nutrients this reduced blood flow may cause increase chances of gum and bone diseases.

5. Medicines causing saliva thickening

There are a few medications for saliva thickening namely anti-histamines and anti-depressants which should be avoided in some cases if possible. Mucus sticks with saliva creating a sticky feeling in your mouth helping in build up more dental plaque and dental tartar.

6. Cementum exposure

At times your teeth' roots can be exposed due to age factors can lead to exposure of the root portion of the tooth called Cementum. Cementum is not a polished surface like enamel. Food particles when lodged at the cementum, if uncleaned for a longer time, have darker brown stains appeared. oral bacteria rapidly grow inside these stains and food debris causing damage to the cementum and surrounding bone resulting in swollen and bleeding gums, tooth sensitivity, and even tooth mobility.

 7. Dehydration

It's essential to drink enough water since dehydration can lead to "Xerostomia," a medical condition that causes a person's mouth to become dry and leave behind insufficient saliva to wash away bacteria and food particles sticking to your teeth and gums.

Myths about scaling and polishing procedure

Several myths have been raised by the public which were proven false by the ADA and dental professionals and expertise YOU NEED TO KNOW,

• It whitens your teeth

• It reduced the strength of your teeth and causes mobility

• It causes spacing of the teeth

• It’s a painful procedure

• It causes prolonged sensitivity

How do I know if I need tooth scaling and when I need teeth cleaning?

It is very easy to judge that are you a candidate for scaling and polishing or not. The criteria are simple you need if you have any of these active issues you could need this treatment:

1) Yellowish, brownish or black accumulations called Dental Calculus / calcified debris are mostly found in the inner surfaces of lower anterior teeth and the back of the molars that cannot be removed by brushing.

2) Bleeding gums while brushing and eating hard food.

3) Halitosis i.e. bad breath from the mouth.

4) Before any orthodontic treatment either with braces or Aligners.

5) Before family planning (conceiving)

4) If you are suffering from any systematic conditions i.e. diabetes

5) Before any surgical procedure such as heart bypass etc.

6) Persistently inflamed gums

7) Esthetical purposes

8) Dull pain while chewing

From whom should I get my scaling and polishing?

You can get your scaling and polishing done by the following:

1) Dentist

2) Specialist Dentist periodontologist

3) Dental hygienist

How much time is required for a teeth cleaning procedure?

A minimum of 30-40 mins is required for a teeth cleaning procedure by a dentist, heavy stains and more dental calculus buildup can at least take an hour to complete. Sometimes teeth cleaning procedure are completed in multiple visits according to gums conditions and most of the time teeth wash and teeth polishing is done on the same day.

How often do I need to get teeth scaling and teeth polishing done?

It depends on your oral hygiene and your daily tooth and gum care. W.H.O. recommends you visit your dentist twice a year for evaluation of your general oral health. If you have maintained oral hygiene accordingly after your first visit for teeth cleaning, then there is no need of getting the scaling and polishing treatment again.

Similarly, if you are unable to maintain oral hygiene even after scaling and polishing sessions you might need to get it done more than twice a year.

Scaling & polishing cost

Scaling and polishing cost in Pakistan ranges between Rs.1, 000- 25,000. Scaling and polishing cost varies depending upon oral conditions i.e. heavy stains like smoker’s stains, betelnut, gutka, pan stains, and hard dental calculus condition, etc. cost you more.

Scaling and polishing costs In the USA, UK, UAE, and other countries vary from U.S $100-12,000 due to currency exchange rates. Let’s discuss factors affecting scaling and polishing price in detail.

Teeth cleaning cost varies according to the following factors

1. Amount of Tartar present on only front teeth outer and inner side, or all teeth, upper or lower teeth present in the mouth. Heavy tartar, calculus, and stains lead to an increase in scaling cost.

2. Scaling and polishing costs differ in hospitals, teaching institutes, and private clinics. It can be decided by the patient according to the available budget patient have.

In the dental teaching institute, the procedures are mostly carried out by a resident dentist or dental students who works under the supervision of a fellowship periodontist, and the teeth cleaning cost is barred by the teaching institute which is why the cost of teeth cleaning and polishing is less in the teaching institute as compared to a private clinic.

Whereas a private clinic, a gums specialist ( periodontist), and senior dentist with the provision of a hygienic and safe environment, sterilization, and premium quality of treatment will charge you more because the clinic is licensed and equipped in terms of the latest equipment, machines, and sterilization. So scaling price is higher. Some patients prefer the clinic because they want the individual attention of the periodontist.

3. Scaling and polishing method they opt as discussed below. Scaling charges are different accordingly

4. Some people only require teeth polishing so polishing charges is almost half the total teeth cleaning cost.

5. Teeth cleaning cost you more if additional procedures like bone grafting, gingivectomy, crown lengthening, flap repositioning, tissue grafting, and deep curettage are also required along with the basic procedure.

6. Area locality: Elite area charge more scaling and polishing price relatively than the lower class, and middle class due to high commercial expenses.

7. Specialization of dentist: A specialist dentist of gums and bone called a periodontist charge you more teeth scaling and teeth polishing price.

8. Co-factors: Patients with severe gums disease (periodontitis) like in systematic diseases diabetes, cancer patient, etc requires more visits so ultimately teeth cleaning cost increases.

Dentistry is not expensive it's the negligence of the patient that leads to the severity of disease-causing decreased chances of preservation of the oral cavity so always report your dentist on time.

Scaling and polishing benefits

• Makes teeth brighter and shinier: Teeth scaling makes it easier to remove dental plaque and hard calculus from teeth which cannot be removed by tooth brushing.

• Improves Esthetic Concern: Esthetically displeasing teeth may become lighter and whiter.

• Protection against dental caries: Proper oral hygiene helps in the prevention of dental caries

• Helps Prevent tooth loss:  Gums disease and dental caries-free teeth will prevent tooth loss.

• Will help to remove light brown/yellow stains, calculus, and tarter: Regular visits and checkups to the dentist are necessary.

• Prevention from Periodontal diseases such as Gingivitis & Periodontitis: Promoting improved health measures such as scaling will help to avoid gum diseases.

• A thorough cleaning to prevent Teeth Staining: Stains such as coffee, tea, and beetle nut stains can easily be removed with the help of scaling.

• Break away from the foul breath and prevents bad breath: The biggest advantage is better breath due to maintaining proper hygiene after teeth wash and teeth polishing.

• Saves the tooth structure as preventive dental care is quite cheaper than reparative ones with long-term results: Administering prophylaxis for cavity prevention with fluoride in polishing paste.

• Improves overall oral health: Scaling is a non-surgical procedure that plays a vital role in maintaining oral health and gives you a healthy smile.

Does every patient need scaling and polishing?

Not, it’s better to visit your dentist before comprehending it yourself. If there would not be any need of doing the treatment, he /she will not recommend it to you.

 Is bleeding after scaling normally?

Yes, it's normal to experience bleeding in that same area for a few minutes following treatment. To stop the elimination of blood clots, carefully brush or floss your teeth while rinsing your mouth with warm water and salt. Avoid removing blood clots with toothpicks and fingernails.

Does scaling and polishing causes sensitivity?

Initially when the treatment is performed some patients might experience mild to moderate sensitivity, which Lasts for 2 to 15 days. It is normal to experience so. Over here some patients think that it is due to the removal of a tooth layer but it’s just a myth, it is rather due to exposed dentinal tubules which were previously covered with dental tartar or food debris. After which gums tend to migrate to their original positions leading the sensitivity to fade away.

It is a myth that dental scaling causes loss of teeth?

Generally, it is assumed that the procedure leads to thinning, loosening, and mobility of teeth. But actually, it's a myth. Some patients with severe gum conditions might feel slight mobility of teeth that generally subside after some time. When healthy gums tissue holds the tooth back firmly in position.

Is teeth washing is painful procedure?

No, not at all it depends on the patient's response and cooperation and the dentist’s handling and pressure control. If a patient experiences mild discomfort during a procedure then a dentist can apply anesthetic gel or ask the patient to rinse with anesthetic mouthwash to get rid of discomfort. If the patient after these measures still complains of pain then the dentist can administer local anesthesia to make the procedure pain-free.

How long does this procedure last?

This procedure last usually for 6 months to years depending on the diet intake like if a person is an habitant of eating sugary foods, acidic drinks, tea, the coffee they’ll be more prone to get plaque buildup in the future and maintaining oral hygiene.

Is scaling polishing good for teeth?

Yes, because you are an habitant of eating a different kinds of foods and drinks all day and that requires a proper cleaning of your mouth daily brushing and flossing cleans your teeth in specific areas. Scaling is needed for those people which do not follow oral hygiene measures and need scaling and polishing twice a year to get rid of dental tartar, staining, and future periodontal diseases.

Does teeth wash whiten your teeth?

Yes, it does whiten your teeth by removing the yellowish /brownish stains from teeth that result from coffee, tea, acidic drinks, etc which is followed by the polishing procedure. If the patient still requires whiter teeth after scaling and polishing procedures then teeth bleaching/teeth whitening and zirconium veneers are advisable.

What is dental polishing?

It’s a procedure done after scaling to smoothen your enamel after roughness from the scaling procedure and tartar removal, gives a patient a glossy & shiny appearance of teeth, and it tends to have fewer bacteria in the future helps remove stains, and brighter your smile.

What causes symptoms like sensitivity and mobility in teeth?

To understand this we need to learn about the normal tooth structure. Our teeth roots are held in a bony socket with threads of fibers. Our mouth is full of hundreds of bacterial species. If food debris keeps on depositing between the gums and the tooth, these bacteria start making colonies around uncleaned areas and deposits form plaque and calculus. These bacterial colonies eat gums and surrounding bone around teeth and start to loosen up the fibers and eventually fibers start to break by continuous deposition of Calculus (Tartar) resulting in apical migration of soft tissue (gum recession) and resorption of hard tissue (bone) and cementum around the roots of teeth, that lead to decrease support around the tooth resulting in tooth mobility. When a dentist removes this dental calculus by tooth scaling initial symptoms of sensitivity are felt due to sudden exposure of sensitive areas of root called root dentin but with time the symptoms subside by using anti-sensitivity kinds of toothpaste and mouthwash, as normal healthy gums migrate back to them to their normal position.

How to Remove Tartar and Plaque from Your Teeth without a Dentist?

How to get rid of plaque and tartar at home? Mostly people ask this question to a dentist. Plaque can be removed by brushing twice a day with a hard toothbrush, but calculus or tartar can only be removed with ultrasonic machines and instruments used in dental clinics.

What you feel after the first session of scaling and polishing?

In mild cases, one could feel noticeable cleaned teeth with bright color, no bad breath (halitosis), no bleeding gums, and overall aesthetically pleasing teeth and gums.

Some patients also report that they are more confident in their daily routine than before because they are not consciously thinking of their bad smile or bad breath.

In severe cases, a patient feels sensitivity and pain that may last up to two weeks, which should be controlled by medicines and anti-sensitive kinds of toothpaste.

How is polishing done?

Polishing is done by rotary polishing cups and brushes using fine polishing pastes and powders.

Methods of scaling procedure

Periodontal condition/gum disease is very common in adults it involves inflammation of gums & surrounding tissues to get inflamed for a prolonged period until it's treated properly. On appointment day for the scaling and polishing procedure, the dentist will take the complete medical and dental history, thoroughly examine the oral condition take X-rays if needed, explain the procedure and guide you before starting the teeth cleaning.

There are three types in which scaling can be done: Scaling is performed by following methods, it's the choice of the dentist which method the dentist chooses according to the patient’s gums condition :

1. Scaling with hand instruments( Manual scaling)

2. Scaling with ultrasonic instruments (Ultrasonic Scaling)

3.Scaling with the laser device

With the growing awareness and technology of using advanced equipment in dentistry, there is an increased importance of providing assessment care, health & oral benefits of periodontal conditions, and Periodontal treatment.

Manual Scaling

Hand instruments/Manual scalers: Manual scaling is done with hands without using any electric and air pressure equipment or motor. Hand scaling is carried out with manual scaling kits including sickle scalers, curettes, explorers, periodontal probes, and chisels. Hand scalers come in different sizes and shapes to reach different parts of the teeth. This is why you will see the dentist switching instruments quite often during manual scaling.

Ultrasonic scaling

Sonic & ultrasonic scalers: The most common and widely used method SONIC/ULTRASONIC SCALERS has been in common practice in all dental clinics across the globe. Dentists and dental hygienists in their setup, use a scaler tip attached to a scaler handpiece that vibrates very fast in a stream of water. The ultrasonic tip uses ultrasound vibrations and water pressure to remove the hard deposits and dental tartar from the teeth which is hard to remove from normal tooth brushing. The ultrasonic scaler grip is easy to handle by the dentist with a proper position and light pressure. Scaler water and saliva in the mouth are removed from the mouth using a small suction device. In severe gum disease, a hand scaler is also used along with an ultrasonic scaler, to check and ensure whether the roots are completely clean. After a tooth and gums margins have been cleaned and root planned, the pocket should shrink, making the gum sit closer to the tooth. You need to be especially careful about cleaning the teeth above the gum line. The teeth scaling procedure is followed by teeth polishing on the same visit in mild cases and the next visit for severe gum disease. After polishing, proper post instructions regarding oral hygiene maintenance i.e. proper tooth brushing method and timings, benefits of using dental floss, and mouth wash explained to the patient.

Teeth cleaning with Laser

Teeth cleaning with Laser is an advanced technology increasingly used in dentistry through which various wavelengths & power control meets the patient's needs to provide the best care for treating gums disease around teeth and periodontal problems. Teeth scaling with Lasers are less invasive and eliminate the need for traditional dental drills and scaler tips, and it helps to reduce anxiety in patients who are not comfortable with the use of the drills. Lasers cause less pain compared to a drill, so the need for anesthesia is reduced. The proper use of lasers helps patients to experience less discomfort, bleeding, and post-op- sensitivity after teeth scaling. Laser scaling is less invasive than regular ultrasonic scaling. The entire process will be much faster and the recovery time will be shorter. The laser also sterilizes the area and provides a painless option to kill harmful bacteria that lowers the risk of bacterial infections

As periodontal disease often starts to show up in adults in their 20s and 40s. Each harbors bacteria in their mouths, which leads to dental plaque buildup if teeth and gums are left uncleaned for days so, after undergoing any form of scaling, exercising good oral hygiene is very important. This will help prevent the recurrence of the problem.

Only qualified dental providers should perform tooth cleaning with laser procedure. They should be skilled and well-trained in the proper use of lasers otherwise using the wrong power can damage the tissue temporarily.

Steps taken before and after teeth scaling on the dental chair are as follows;

1. Prophylaxis antibiotics in case of medical diseases like uncontrolled diabetes, recent heart diseases, etc.

2. Stop the anticoagulant with the permission of their cardiologist or medical doctor.

3. Antimicrobial and anesthetic mouthwash rinse

4. Numbs the gums area as per need

5. Scaling or root planning procedure

6. Desensitizing paste/varnish/bonding agent used to avoid post-op teeth sensitivity.

7. Polishing ( to smoothen the roughness on the tooth after removing plaque and tartar by ultrasonic scaling)

8. Flossing

9. Post-procedure instructions, medications if required, and visit a dentist two times a year.

Alternatives of oral hygiene besides scaling & polishing

There are a few alternatives to maintain your oral hygiene at home

1) Teeth brushing(with Manual or electric toothbrush)

2) Antimicrobial mouthwash

3) Rinsing your mouth with salt water often

4) Flossing (floss thread, interdental brush, water pick)

5) Toothpicks as per need

6) Miswak

How to whiten teeth naturally at home?

At home, you have to practice proper tooth brushing methods and timings i.e. before going to bed and after breakfast. Rinse with water after every meal, color drinks, and smoke. Use teeth whitening toothpaste if you are habitual of tea, coffee, and smoking. The use of baking soda, charcoal-based toothpaste, and lemon peel sometimes also helps temporarily whiten your teeth.

If the above measurements are failed and are not enough for your case to get white teeth, for whitening your teeth you need an appointment with a dentist to get a consultation first, they may prescribe you scaling and polishing, whitening your teeth either in-office bleaching, laser teeth whitening or home bleaching with customized trays, teeth whitening pens or dental veneers.

Does Ultrasonic scaling tips damage the tooth surface?

We need to understand the outermost covering of the tooth is enamel it is the hardest part of our human body that cannot be abraded or damaged by a blunted scaler tip.

FACT: According to the MOH'S hardness scale tooth enamel is harder than steel.

Is teeth scaling safe for teeth?

The most popular myth about teeth scaling patients asks in the day-to-day clinic. Yes, tooth scaling is a completely safe basic hygiene procedure where scaling tips only vibrate off the tartar as they are always blunt, you wouldn’t even feel a thing!

How often should you get teeth scaling done?

You should generally make an appointment to see your dentist every three to twelve months depending on your gum risks this will reduce gingivitis (a mild form of gum disease) and prevent its progression to periodontitis (severe gum and bone disease). Once in a lifetime, it is necessary even if you don’t have any major concerns.

Do kids/childen need scaling?

Pediatric Dentist may recommend teeth wash in Children while mostly we prefer polishing where teeth are polished with the help of a small & soft rubber-tipped “brush” and flavored paste will help to smooth the enamel making it tough for sticky plaque to adhere to the tooth

Post procedural instructions after teeth cleaning

There are a few post-procedural instructions that the dentist tells the patient to follow right after this procedure to prevent sensitivity, these are ;

• Don’t consume cold and hot fluids after scaling

• Mouthwash vigorously after 24 hours

• Flossing everyday

• Do not exercise for 24 hours in some cases

• Do not eat hot & spicy foods for 24 hours

How to maintain my scaling and polishing treatment/ post-operative instructions?

After getting your teeth washed and polishing is done one needs to maintain oral hygiene by following simple steps:

1. Avoid taking anything(Fluids and food) at extreme temperatures either cold, hot, or spicy initially for 24 hrs.

2.  Do not consume alcoholic beverages and smoke for 24 hours

3. If you are experiencing any mild pain or bleeding after this procedure take prescribed anti-inflammatory drugs or pain relievers and consult your dentist in case of bleeding.

4. Rinse with warm salt water rinse ¾ times a day for 3 days if you don’t have any blood pressure issue

5. Brushing should be resumed after the soreness is gone, normal its takes 6 to 12 hours. Brush daily using a soft bristle brush. Keep in mind that you need to attain a maximum number of hours of a clean mouth, to do so brush after breakfast in the morning, and just before going to bed at night. Meanwhile in the middle of the day rinse off after every meal such as lunch, teatime, or snacking.

6.  Use proper brushing technique, keep the brush at 45 degrees to the tooth surface, rotate in circular motions, repeat on all tooth surfaces, and don’t forget to clean your tongue.

7.  Use waxed floss to clean the spaces between the teeth. If you have wide spaces between the teeth, use a water flosser or interdental brush to keep the inner areas of the teeth clean.

8. Avoid food and drinks that contain coloring additives because they will stain your enamel again.

9. Visit your dentist once a year.

What are ideal teeth brushing timings?

Most people brush their teeth before breakfast. They want to start their day with fresh breath. However, this practice is not recommended by dentists because after 10 to 30 minutes of teeth cleaning, food debris from breakfast, brunch lunch, and dinner stuck on and between the teeth for all day long till the next morning wake up tooth brushing. In this practice, only teeth and gums remain clean for 10 to 30 minutes in 24 hours and there are more chances of plaque, tartar, and dental caries.

The Ideal time to brush the teeth is before going to bed and after breakfast. In this practice, your teeth remain clean for almost 9 to 12 hours which reduces the chances of gums diseases and dental caries.

How long should I brush my teeth?

You should brush your teeth for at least 2 minutes to ensure the cleanliness of all surfaces of teeth from the front, back, and inner surfaces. You can track your time by using a 2-minute hourglass or electric toothbrush with a built-in timer.

Why do we have to brush after breakfast and the night before sleep?

It is said and researched by dentists that if we brush the morning after breakfast and before going to bed we break the cycle of plaque buildup and caries which is building up the whole night. And it is necessary to brush our teeth at night before sleep as we consumed a lot of food during the whole day and to maintain our oral hygiene practice it's better to brush and rinse with mouthwash before sleep which prevents the building up of plaque and decay the whole night.

What are the consequences of delaying teeth scaling treatment?

The consequences of delaying your treatment are:

1)Bleeding Gums

2)Esthetically unpleasant appearance

3)Weakening of teeth

4)Prone to oral infections

5)Bad Breath while speaking and kissing

6)High Susceptibility to Systemic Infections like upper respiratory tract infections, heart diseases, etc

7) Teeth mobility and Tooth Loss

What is Deep Curettage/root planning/deep cleaning/deep scaling/root cleaning?

Root planing or deep scaling involves using a curette to remove the residual embedded subgingival calculus and diseased cementum structure. To achieve gingival reattachment, the goal of root planing is to remove any plaque or calculus deposits in the deep part of teeth roots as well as a little amount of cementum.

The pocket should close up after a tooth has been root planed, bringing the gum line closer to the tooth. Cleaning the teeth below the gum line requires extra caution. It will probably be necessary to redo root planning frequently. After root planing, gums regrow and adhere firmly around teeth so you might feel them tighter than before.

Let's sum it up!

The dental scaling and polishing procedure is the conventional and preventive treatment and is being widely practiced as a basic procedure for many years in dentistry. It is the most demandable treatment which patient opts from a dentist/dental hygienist because of reasonable price and affordability, it prevents future decay and gum diseases and also helps to remove calculus and stains from the specific areas of teeth, so you can say it is a therapeutic and cosmetic option for teeth and gums. So if you get Aligners or braces, you would surely need scaling and polishing treatment before the start of Aligners and braces, in mid, and after braces removal.
