The most important step every patient is curious about is what to do and don’t do after the extraction of teeth in Aligners, braces, surgical tooth extraction, simple tooth extraction, and wisdom tooth removal.
Here are some important guidelines:
• Keep the gauze placed in the extracted socket for 30 minutes and do not talk to anyone during this time.
• If you want to talk with someone, you can write it down on paper or text on mobile or convey it with hand movements.
• Spitting and changing gauze is strictly prohibited in the first 30 minutes of tooth extraction because it can delay the clotting time.
• After 30 minutes, throw the gauze away, take the medicines with water or milk as prescribed by your doctor and you can enjoy ice cream if there is no diabetes. Ice cream will help in clot formation.
• For the first 24 hours, avoid spitting, gargling, tooth brushing, and drinking through a “straw”
• Smoking is prohibited for 10 days after tooth extraction because smoking dislodges the blood clot again and hence prolongs the healing time.
• For the first 24 hours, eat a cold soft diet like custard, yogurt, milkshakes, fresh juices, porridge, pudding, smoothies, rice, bread sandwich, bun, boiled mashed vegetables, shami kebab, boiled egg, and avoid hot, spicy, hard food like B.B.Q, pizza, burger, hard chapattis, soup, whole chicken, whole mutton, dry fruits, nuts, frizzy drinks, tea, and coffee.
• Avoid tongue and finger contact with the tooth extracted site for the first 24 hours.
• A little bleeding, swelling, and pain are normal in the first 48 hours. If you feel pain and swelling after that, inform your doctor.
• After 24 hours, clean the socket area with a toothbrush very gently and for the next 3 days, gargle with lukewarm salt water twice a day if there is no blood pressure.
• Follow the doctor’s instructions and take medicines as advised.
For dental health and strength, visit your dentist twice a year.
